On July 29, 2022, the Government of Canada launched an engagement paper and questionnaire on Canada's first permanent public transit funding envelope of $3 billion annually starting in 2026-27. The paper set out the Government's vision for public transit and active transportation, including a focus on driving economic, environmental, social, and housing outcomes, and improving collaboration amongst all orders of government. Feedback, ideas and solutions were sought from the public, provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous peoples, transit agencies, and stakeholders to help inform the design of permanent public transit funding.

Once in place, permanent public transit funding will help improve access to public transit and active transportation and support the development of more affordable, sustainable, and inclusive communities by creating good jobs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing housing affordability.
